BEAR at your door? Let it in & scream

Most non-fiction writers see the bear at their door and get all excited. But they simply chase it away, and their book fails to ignite interest in readers.

Bear at the door! Have you heard of this phrase?

The adage ‘bear at the door’ is a metaphorical expression used to signify a problem or challenge that is looming or imminent. Just like encountering a bear at your door would be a significant and immediate threat, the phrase implies that there is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed or dealt with urgently. It’s often used to emphasize the seriousness or urgency of a situation, suggesting that action needs to be taken promptly to prevent negative consequences.

This, in a nutshell, sums up a basic non-fiction book.

And this is exactly the mistake most non-fiction writers make.

First, they identify the problem they wish to address in the book. [Excellent! Way to begin!]

Next, they get too excited and offer the solution. [Wrong! Stop right there!]

Here’s the trick…

Enlarge the bear at the door. Magnify the problem. Make it seem like the worst problem to have.

Don’t stop yet…

Then scream as if the bear is inside your home 😉 create an emergency and urgency. Make it seem like only you can solve the problem.

Then, only after you have done the above… Chase the bear out. Offer your solution.

Think of this – Why should the reader buy your book, when there are hundreds of books offering solutions to the issues that you wish to address in your book? So, make your narrative interesting. One way of doing that is to build up the tempo and present yourself as the saviour 😊
